They also sell boards to hold the foils, special combs to section hair for the foils, and, of course, “miracle products” to repair your hair after it’s been damaged by foils.
Educators and influencers in the industry also play a part. They offer expensive workshops with fancy names, teaching foil-based techniques while pushing the products they’re associated with. This business model ensures that the foil technique remains relevant, not because it’s the best solution, but because it’s incredibly profitable.
The real problem is that the industry often prioritizes making quick money over offering truly innovative, customer-focused solutions that prioritize hair health. Today, there are many modern alternatives that deliver great results without the need for foils. These methods are gentler on the hair and avoid the risk of heat damage.
That said, foils aren’t always bad. There are specific hair types and coloring techniques where aluminum foil, when used properly and with great care, can still be a valid option. Especially for very dark hair or complex, multi-dimensional color patterns, foils may be necessary to achieve the desired effect. However, it requires an experienced professional who knows the risks and takes every step to avoid damage. This means placing the foils correctly and closely monitoring the process.
When used thoughtfully, foils can be part of a high-quality coloring technique. But the key is to focus on hair health, not just quick results or industrial profits.
